Building Practical Life Skills With Young Toddlers

Children enjoyed the sponging activity. It involves children dipping sponges into a container of water and squeezing it out. This builds strength in their hands and is great for hand-eye co-ordination.

They also enjoyed the colored rice activity. We dyed rice grains with different food colors, i.e., blue, green, red and yellow. Once the rice is dry, children use their hands to pick up rice and pour it into another plate. A second activity with the colored rice is using a teaspoon to pick up the rice and adding it to another plate. As the children build their strength and hand-eye co-ordination, we do see less spills as they smoothly transfer rice from one hand or teaspoon into the container.
