There’s never a dull moment at Tawa Montessori. Our daily schedule follows a specific format, but includes different activities each day depending on chosen themes. Here’s an overview of a typical day at the centre.
Early Morning
Children are dropped off each morning, some as early as 7:00 a.m., and have the option of either eating a healthy snack or completing a self-selected activity. Self-selected activities, such as puzzles or colouring, are based on a theme that’s chosen every week or month for each program. For example, preschoolers may focus on camping, transportation or animals and all activities are centered around the designated topic.
Offering a morning snack and encouraging self-selected activities helps children settle in and sets an expectation of what to expect upon arrival, allowing routines to be established.
Once everyone arrives, each group starts with a learning activity. Infants might do arts and crafts, storytelling, singing or another sensory activity. Toddlers may complete a group activity or sit down for story time, while the preschoolers might begin with individualized learning. Individualized learning involves several children working on specific activities based on their current skill sets. The teacher rotates between each child to provide one-on-one assistance.
Mid-Morning
Each program group enjoys an outdoor activity around 10:00 a.m. to allow everyone to get fresh air and burn some energy. Infants are often put in strollers to go for nature walks. Toddlers and preschoolers spend time in a fenced playground area, and some of the older children play in a nearby field.
At Tawa Montessori, we aim to take children outside once per day. However, during cold winter months, physical activities are held inside the centre. Sometimes groups do indoor walks around the building or play games within their designated rooms.
Early Afternoon
After being outside, everyone washes up and lunch is served. Then the children settle in for nap time. Not everyone naps and some wake up early, so they’re given quiet toys and activities to ensure they’re still engaged with something without waking the others.
Once all children are awake, each group completes a table top activity. This may include crafts, drawing or playing at the water tables. Then, everyone enjoys a tasty afternoon snack.
Late Afternoon
During the late afternoon, group activities are completed, including storytelling, games and movement activities. Once again, these differ depending on the age group, theme and what will keep the children engaged.
The day ends with self-selected activities, helping everyone wind down until parents arrive for pick up.
